dream demons
Libido, who had been quite undisturbed for a while began to move. Heart and Head noticed, so they lowered their voices. Head had a hard time keeping his voice down in spite of Heart's whispering pleas. So Heart ended up having to raise her voice too. That did it. Libido yawned, stretched and said "I'm hungry. What's for dinner?" The other two replied, "Nothing. You're on a diet remember)" So Libido got really angry. It wasn't fair that they were being nourished while he starved. He began to growl. At this point She decided to open a book on Afro-American literature and try to read. the idea being to just ignore Libido. It usually worked. After a while, Libido realised his tantrums were getting him nowhere so he lay down and eventually fell asleep. Head and Heart, who all this time had been arguing, decided to do the same. So realising that Her vigilance was no longer required, She too lay back and closed her eyes. It was Sleep's turn to watch over them all while they entered the State of the semi-conscious.
Once there,Head woke up. He just couldn't sleep. He got up and walked. And he walked. And he walked. He couldn't keep still. Heart, who's a very light sleeper too, heard him. She too got up and began to walk. But while Head was mumbling some kind of repetitive chant of which Heart could only hear the word "nothing", Heart was beginning to hurt. Her legs ached from all the walking, but she couldn't stop. Something was making her walk in circles. She asked Sleep what it was that wasn't allowing her to rest, but Sleep being nothing but a minder, had no answers.
Heart was going round and round. Round and round until she could not take it any longer and she let out an almighty scream. Libido awoke with a jump.
"Now look what you've done!", said Head. "I knew this would happen! If only you'd shut up, like I told you to!"
Libido realised where he was. Aha. This was his domain. The land of the semi-conscious. He could do as he wished and no one could restrain him. Now it was his turn to be free, while the other two were suppressed. Head threw futile warnings at him, but he managed to duck quick enough to avoid them. Heart pleaded, but being the softie she is, was convinced and ended up going over the mark with Libido, much to Head's annoyance. Sleep watched on, deprived of powers, while Head tried to wake Her up. But She, from Her semi-conscious State refused to be woken.
Before Sleep's official time was up, She woke up, disturbed emotionally and mentally but almost physically satiated. There was the Afro-American Literature book on the bedside table. Sleep had been kidnapped by Libido who was nowhere to be seen. Only Head and Heart remained in the Land of the Real. Heart was still pacing in circles, and she could still hear Head mumbling something about "nothing"!
